Field Cushions (2015)
David Design, Sweden
The starting point of the cushion project was an attempt to find a simplistic combination of qualities, colours or fabrics to create a subtle, but unexpected pattern. The concept is based on combining two sheets of textile and attaching them with asymmetric seams displaced from the conventional position on the sides.
By adding quilted seams in the fabric – like furrows in a field – the textile direction is emphasized and creates a decorative pattern. Furthermore, this strong characteristic has inspired to the name ‘Field’.
Quilting is a decorative treatment made by backing a thin layer of foam on fabric and applying seams through both materials. This is a traditional method typically used on bed coverings to keep the padding in place.
The quilted fabric gives the cushion a refined and complex look, when infact the sewing process is simple and quick. The quilted fabric follows around the end of the cushion in a continuos flow to emphasize the mirror effect of the two sides.
